How do I file on the Utah State Construction Registry (SCR)?
Create an account on the Utah SCR website. Click the "Create a Filing" tab and select the type of filing you wish to create. (For most subcontractors and general contractors, this will be a preliminary notice.) Fill out the required information about the property, contractor, and your company. Make sure to file within the deadline (20 days after starting work on the project) and complete the filing thoroughly with correct and updated information — this will influence your ability to lien and/or foreclose later.

Do I have to file a preliminary notice on the SCR in order to file a lien?
Yes. Filing on the SCR within the deadline(s) is required to preserve your right to file a lien on a property.
What are the requirements to file a lien?
You must have filed a preliminary notice on the State Construction Registry (SCR) within the statutory deadline of 20 days from starting work on the project. If you filed late, the SCR only preserves your lien rights for work done starting 5 days after the filing was submitted, so adjust the lien amount accordingly. When you request a lien, make sure to fill out the request form completely with property information from the SCR filing, as well as project start and end dates, and the lien amount.
